Ahmet Rüçhan Akar, MD, FRCS CTh, is Professor of Cardiovascular Surgery at Ankara University, specialized in advanced heart failure, heart transplantation, LVAD, RVAD, BiVAD, TAH, ECMO, aortic surgery, coronary surgery, complex heart valve repair surgery, and vasculitis/interventional management of chronic venous disease.
CV SUMMARY
Ahmet Rüçhan Akar, MD, FRCS CTh, is Professor of Cardiovascular Surgery at Ankara University Faculty of Medicine and Director of Ankara University Organ Transplantation Programs, serving as Clinical Lead for Heart Transplantation and Mechanical Circulatory Support.
He received his MD from Ankara University (1987), completed General Surgery training (1992), and subsequently pursued cardiothoracic training in the United Kingdom, including appointments at Royal Aberdeen Sick Children’s Hospital, Hammersmith Hospital, Western Infirmary, Northern General Hospital (Cardiac & Lung Transplant Unit), and Glenfield Hospital (Cardiac Surgery and ECMO Center). He passed the Intercollegiate Specialty Examination in Cardiothoracic Surgery (2001) and the Turkish Board for Cardiovascular Surgery (2001), becoming Associate Professor (2004) and Professor (2011).
His clinical and research interests include advanced heart failure, heart transplantation, ventricular assist devices, ECMO, valve repair, minimally invasive cardiac surgery, sutureless aortic valve replacement, CTEPH surgery, arrhythmia surgery, and aortic disease. He has held major leadership roles including Chief Medical Officer of Ankara University Cebeci Hospitals (2014–2020), Department Chair (2014–2017), and President of the Turkish Society of Cardiovascular Surgery (2017–2019). He has served in editorial roles and as a reviewer for leading international journals and national funding agencies.
